SEMESTER SERIES: KIRK SMITH – Club 16: Are You In?

“Welcome to Fight Club. The first rule of Fight Club is: youdo not talk about Fight Club.” –Tyler Durden Unlike Fight Club, I’m happy to talk about Club 16. By now,I’m sure that many of you have found multiple references to Club 16 on theGoizueta website, or through a careful combing of our social media pages. But what is this mythical Club 16? What does Club 16 have to do with my experience at Goizueta Business School? Simply put, Club 16 is the opportunity to engage with your classmates to experience all that Atlanta has to offer students. The initial idea was to...

SEMESTER SERIES: KIRK SMITH – Get comfortable with being uncomfortable

SEMESTER SERIES: KIRK SMITH – Get comfortable with being uncomfortable

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable The above phrase has many applications in life. Before business school, I was a CrossFit instructor in Northern Virginia and frequently referenced this phrase when introducing new clients into this intense, athletic regimen. Since starting business school, however, I have found that this also applies to many aspects of the academic experience. You will NOT get along with your core-team 100% of the time. If you do, then you aren’t pushing each others’ buttons enough to find the best solution. There WILL be uncomfortable moments. Whether they are with a small team, or being...

SEMESTER SERIES: KIRK SMITH – “Can’t repeat the past?… Why of course you can!”

“Can’t repeat the past?… Why of course you can!” – Jay Gatsby Many times in our lives, we are told that we can’t relive our glory days. We don’t get do-overs for important events. In business school, however, you do. Goizueta’s Student Activities Board (SAB) recently put together a semi-formal dance for the entire school; one of two such events held throughout the school year. While there are many social events held throughout the year or organized by students (see trips to Talladega, tailgates at football games, dinner parties), SAB is in charge of organizing formal interactions between the...

SEMESTER SERIES: KIRK SMITH – ENJOYING THE FALL WEATHER

“Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn.” –Elizabeth Lawrence You know what’s awesome about the fall? Leaves changing, return of pumpkin everything, lower humidity, clear skies, and the realization that you are more than halfway finished the first semester of your business school career.  Time flies when you’re having fun…or learning. At Goizueta, we divide the first semester into three blocks. Some classes are only one block, most are two, and one lasts all three. This combination allows you to complete all “core” classes in the fall.  After...

SEMESTER SERIES: KIRK SMITH – FOOTBALL ISN’T JUST A GAME; IT’S A WAY OF LIFE

SEMESTER SERIES: KIRK SMITH – FOOTBALL ISN’T JUST A GAME; IT’S A WAY OF LIFE

Those words couldn’t be more true in the South, especially Atlanta. Group meetings are frequently altered to accommodate college and professional football schedules. Students participate in fantasy football leagues with professors…for credit. All of this enthusiasm for AMERICAN football (sorry, soccer fans; it’s just the way we talk here) translates into many social activities such as tailgates, viewing parties, Sunday Funday. What I have enjoyed at Goizueta, however, is the opportunity to take the field with my classmates to compete in intramural football. Running around on a cool evening helps break up your days, and nights, of studying. I...

SEMESTER SERIES : KIRK SMITH – SHOULD I ARRIVE EARLY? ANSWER: YES

SEMESTER SERIES : KIRK SMITH – SHOULD I ARRIVE EARLY? ANSWER: YES

“Are you the student who posted in the Facebook group? Get in the car now!”  That was my first introduction to the community at Goizueta Business School (GBS).  As I walked to watch the One Year program play IM softball, one of the students recognized me, picked me up, and drove me to a field I never would have found on my own.  I’m sure future blogs will discuss the community aspect of the GBS proposition, yet the experience highlighted an important decision many prospective students face: When do I move to my future home? I believe that you...
