Which academic or extracurricular achievement are you most proud of during business school?
I am most proud of being the Co-President of the Goizueta Consulting Association for the past year. As the largest professional club on campus, GCA attracts nearly half of each incoming class to help hone their skills for consulting recruiting. While leading the club, I was fortunate to have a talented and dedicated group of classmates on the board alongside me, helping the Class of 2027 achieve their goals of landing internships in the industry. This experience was one of the highlights of business school because it not only taught me more about how to be an effective leader of strangers, but it also taught me how to lead amongst my peers. I enjoyed every minute of the experience, and I couldn’t feel more honored to have led the club through another successful recruiting season.
What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career?
Although this achievement was not mine alone, I am most proud of bringing all of my Paratroopers home safely from our deployment to Afghanistan between 2019 and 2020. My Paratroopers worked hard day in and day out for months beforehand, training to be experts in their craft and planning for any and all contingencies. While luck often plays the biggest role when you go to combat, I am a firm believer in making your own luck through hard work and diligent execution. I hope to have a successful career full of many milestones and highlights, but I am certain that no achievement will top this one.
Why did you choose Goizueta?
My biggest draw to Goizueta Business School was the small-by-design, tight-knit community that our school fosters. Having been “the new kid” in a new place many times growing up, I knew that I thrived in smaller settings that allowed me to get to know not just faces and names, but the stories, trials, and triumphs that make each person so unique. At Emory, I get to experience an environment just like that every single day, which has allowed me to get to know my classmates on a much deeper level. Goizueta systemically enables this by hosting a weekly, on-campus happy hour, class vs. class sporting events, international meals hosted at restaurants around Atlanta, and other events that provide connection points across our student body. I am grateful to have gotten the opportunity to learn with and from so many incredible people, and I look forward to staying in touch with them for years to come.
Who was your favorite MBA professor?
My favorite professor is Professor Omar Rodriguez-Vila. I have had the pleasure of taking classes with Professor Omar for three of my four semesters in business school across different dimensions of marketing, and I wish there was time for me to take more. Professor Omar’s classes range from introductory concepts in Core Marketing, to developing a full-scale business case for “Good Growth,” where we learned how to drive economic value by solving a business problem while reducing negative externalities.
His experience gained from years at The Coca-Cola Company, coupled with his research findings, makes his classes entertaining, his insights valuable, and his impact profound. On top of all of that, his perpetual smile lights up the room, and he has an innate ability to make you feel like his most important priority whenever he talks to you. He goes out of his way to help his students inside and outside of the classroom, and he is an unbelievable asset to the Goizueta community.
What was your favorite course as an MBA?
My favorite course as an MBA was Pricing Strategy & Analytics, taught by Dr. Saloni Firasta-Vastani. This course revealed a lot of the mystery behind pricing and gave me a much greater understanding of how companies can optimize their pricing for their industry, target customer, and in reaction to macroeconomic trends. The best part about the course were the case studies that we analyzed, doing “live” cases with pricing practitioners from Delta Air Lines, Chick-fil-A, Georgia Pacific, and others. I thoroughly enjoyed having access to pricing experts in the moment so I could pick their brains and understand pricing on a deeper level. It was a privilege to learn from Dr. Firasta-Vastani, who is regularly consulted by companies and the media for her expertise in pricing.
What was your favorite MBA event or tradition at Goizueta?
Our weekly, on-campus happy hour, Keeping Everyone at Goizueta Social, or KEGS, is by far my favorite MBA tradition. Not only is it a great chance to unwind and chat with classmates about anything and everything, but it is also a fun way to end the week among friends, alumni, faculty, and staff. Between the impressive selection of food, cold drinks, and good music, it is the perfect way to see everything that makes Goizueta a phenomenal place to go to school, all in one afternoon.
Looking back over your MBA experience, what is the one thing you’d do differently and why?
If I could do one thing differently during this experience, I would have taken more finance classes. There were a number of classes that covered topics that I had never heard of, and I was a bit unsure about going that far out of my comfort zone. I feel like I missed out on some great course content and missed out on learning from some incredible members of our faculty who I have heard nothing but great things about.
What was the most impactful case study you had in business school and what was the biggest lesson you learned from it?
The most impactful case for me was the Boeing 7E7 decision. It stood out because it brought together many of the core themes of business school in one discussion. We had to evaluate a multibillion-dollar investment using finance tools, think through competitive dynamics with Airbus from a strategic lens, and consider operational risk, customer demand, and leadership judgment at the same time. It showed me that real business decisions rarely fit neatly into one functional area the way classes sometimes do. The biggest lesson I took away is that the right strategic decision does not always look obvious in a model. Business school has reinforced that strong leaders combine analytical rigor with judgment, especially when facing uncertainty, and make decisions that balance financial discipline with long-term positioning and value creation.
What did you love most about your business school’s town?
Atlanta was my home prior to business school, so I was already a pretty big fan. Going to Emory gave me reasons to spend more time in and around Decatur, which is not somewhere I ventured very often. I loved getting to see a different part of Atlanta that I hadn’t explored before, and it was even better to be able to do that with my friends. I shamelessly also love the Atlanta airport because it means that I almost never have to take a connecting flight to get anywhere in the world.
What is one way that your business school has integrated AI into your programming? What insights did you gain from using AI?
Faculty at Goizueta have encouraged us to use AI to help us pressure-test our hypotheses and dive deeper into classroom material. In Professor Omar’s Good Growth class, we used AI to help refine negative externalities that affected our selected industry. From there, we were able to create synthetic data to help us narrow down which externalities potential customers care most about. It blows my mind how quickly AI can research and distill information, as well as how valuable of a tool it can be when performing quantitative analysis. However, I have quickly realized that no amount of AI can replace the knowledge you accumulate when you read through pages of case studies, white papers, and industry reports.
Which MBA classmate do you most admire?
Dan Heckman is the classmate I admire most. Between Dan’s out-of-the-box thinking and his deeply thoughtful questions, he consistently pushes our discussions, both inside and outside of the classroom, to deeper levels than I have experienced before. As a fellow veteran, Dan and I became fast friends and nearly inseparable. As I’ve gotten to know him over the past two years, I am consistently impressed by his intellect, experience, and ability to balance being a great teammate and friend, to being an even better husband and father. Dan always takes time for others and doesn’t hesitate to lend a hand to anyone who asks for his help. It is an honor to learn beside him, and our class would be far worse off without his contributions. I am looking forward to many more years of conversations, debates, and DIY projects.
What are the top two items on your professional bucket list?
- Lead a business unit or consulting practice area on an international scale so that I can continue to work with talented people from all over the world.
- Provide mentorship and support to those who come after me, so that they can be better than I will ever be capable of doing.
