Marissa – Experiencing South Africa Day 9

Nelson Mandela and hundreds of other political prisoners were held at Robben’s Island without due process and in worse conditions than murderers. Our tour guide was also a political prisoner, held at Robben’s Island for almost a decade from the age of 18 on. He shared his very personal story with us, and afterwards we talked about the struggle and importance of not harboring hatred in your heart. We head to the top of table mountain just after lunch. I’m horribly afraid of heights, but my classmates kept me calm and distracted as we made the steep ascent in...

Marissa – Experiencing South Africa Day 8

We start the day off at the beautiful vineyards of Boschendale, where we had our first tasting and wine lesson of the day. Its hot, but a hundred year old oak tree makes the weather in the shade, perfect! Driving through wine country after lunch in Franschoek, we passed the jail Mandela was released from in 1990. It still amazes me that South Africa’s checkered history wasn’t that long ago, and how far the country has come in two decades. After a long day, we all decide to take a sunset cruise. Out in the middle of the Atlantic...

Marissa – Experiencing South Africa Day 7

A lot of people know that I love cars. I really enjoyed talking with the guys at Optimal Energy about their electric car, the Joule, and their marketing strategy. The lead consultant actually lived in my hometown of Detroit for some years! After the hottest day of the trip so far, Cape Town finally cooled off. A group of us headed down to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront for a late night seafood dinner.

Wine Tour – We visited Stellenbosch and Boschendal – fabulous wineries just outside of Cape Town. I wouldn’t quite call them “tastings” since Stellenbosch gave us 10 wines to “taste.” Cape Town, South Africa – Fire and Ice milkshake – Who knew that our hotel would have the best milkshakes in Cape Town? This is the Lindt – o – liscous made with melted Lindt chocolate… yes I had several and yes I’ve been on a diet ever since we’ve returned! Pirate Sunset Cruise – Cape Town has incredible sunsets so after our wine tours we decided to take...
